Tallyho, My Tireless Tech-Tweaking  Testers,

The reason this post is titled “Earth, Wind, and Epix” is because, now that I have upgraded my beloved Samsung SGH-i907 Pocket PC Smartphone (Click Here for more information) to its latest ROM version, it is as though the winds of the earth’s wireless jet stream are beneath my wings, allowing me to soar higher and higher.

The following are the general steps I took in order to update my Samsung Epix SGH-i907 Smartphone to the latest firmware version that resolves several Epix glitches:

Even though I have computers with various operating systems installed, I decided to upgrade my phone using my Windows XP Desktop PC.

1.
I downloaded and unpacked the Samsung ROM upgrade software and installation instructions to my XP computer.

2.
I embossed 1 copy of the installation instructions in Braille and sent one copy to my printer.

3.
I thoroughly reviewed the installation instructions.

4.
I made a backup of all of the user data on my phone including ring tones, CAB files, and device system settings as I prefer them.  I also documented all of this information.

5.
I performed a cursory Candle Shore BLOG search to locate Epix-related Windows Registry tweaking articles.

6.
I inserted a fresh battery into the phone, removed its SIM card, and confirmed that all necessary drivers were correctly installed on my PC.

7.
Because of the high power usage of the Epix, I installed an auxiliary powered USB hub.

8.
Carefully following the instructions, I launched the Epix upgrade installation program on my PC.  Even though there was activity on both the PC and the phone, as was expected, after about 30 minutes had passed, it became clear that the process had stalled.

9.
After rebooting the phone and the PC, I launched the application again.  Paying closer attention, I noticed that the installation process stalled  after about 10 minutes.

10.
I powered off both the phone and the PC.  Then, I removed the powered USB hub and attached the Epix directly to the PC.

11.
Again, I launched the installation program and this time, mercifully, the process completed successfully after about 10 minutes.

12.
The Samsung installation instructions read as though the phone is supposed to automatically reboot upon successful completion of the installation procedure.  This is not so.  All that is supposed to happen upon closing the upgrade tool is that the phone should automatically power off.

In case you’re interested, from the time I actually launched the installation program, for the first time, to when I confirmed that the process was completed successfully, took about two hours.  This, of course, does not include the time it took to backup, document, and setup for the procedure.  The total amount of time needed to perform the steps, listed above, took approximately four hours.

But I had only just begun.  Now that the phone was up and running, my first task was to make it accessible again.

1.
I installed the latest version of Code Factory’s Mobile Speak for Pocket PC.

2.
I created a synchronization partnership between the phone and the PC to confirm that the previous sync issues, addressed in the update, were resolved.

3.
Installed Windows Mobile Registry and internal GPS unlocking software.

4.
Configured secure Bluetooth device partnerships on the phone.

5.
Installed Code Factory’s Mobile Geo.

6.
Using the articles posted on the Candle Shore BLOG as a guide, I modified the phone’s Registry to my preferred settings.

7.
Synchronized my ever increasing media library between my PC and my phone.

8.
Installed custom ring tones, documents, and system notification settings.

In conclusion, I am delighted to state that, despite a bumpy beginning, my beloved Samsung SGH-i907 Smartphone Pocket PC is running faster and more smoothly than ever.  I am oh so glad I took the time to upgrade the phone.

If, like me, you are a true Epix Explorer, once updated with the latest firmware, your Epix will take you to the most exciting regions of your wireless imagination.

I’ll see you there.

Mark
