Hello Everyone,

Click Here for an update to this article.

I am so delighted to report that I have increased the accessibility of my new Samsung Epix (Blackjack 3) with the current version of Code Factory’s Mobile Speak PocketPC v2.0146, for the blind and low vision, by implementing the following configurations:

NOTE 1:
The information in this document has not been officially sanctioned by Code Factory or any of its affiliates.

NOTE 2:
The following workarounds will allow MSP customers to use the Samsung Epix without employing its touch screen.

NOTE 3:
The following is meant as a temporary Mobile Speak for PocketPC and Samsung Epix (Blackjack 3) access solution, only, until and/or unless Code Factory releases a new version of Mobile Speak officially supporting this device.

NOTE 4:
The following configurations are those that I find useful.  They are in no way meant to be considered comprehensive.

MOBILE SPEAK HARDWARE KEY ASSIGNMENTS
Upon installing MSP on the Samsung Epix, the following key assignments are selected on the bottom row of the Epix QWERTY keyboard.  I will list the hardware names of these keys along with their key assignments in a letter and number combination.  L = Left and R = Right.  For example, L2 refers to the second key from the left side of the device while R2 refers to the second key from the right side of the device.

L2 is the MediaNet key.  MSP treats it as the ALT key.
L3 is the Calendar key.  MSP treats it as the Shift key.
R2 is the Camera key.  MSP treats it as the Control key.
R1 is the Message key.  MSP treats it as the Tab key.  (This is the key on the lower right corner of the QWERTY keyboard.)

Each of the four keys listed above may have two distinct functions depending upon whether it is tapped and immediately released or tapped and held down for 2 or more seconds.

1.
Disable the Finger Mouse in favor of the 4-way navigation feature.  To do this, from the Settings menu, select System; then choose Finger Mouse and place a Checkmark in the box labeled 4-way Navigation button.

2.
It is important that you remove all but the Voice Command hardware key button assignments.  To do this, from the Settings menu, select Buttons.

NOTE 5:
Microsoft Voice Command is automatically assigned to the MediaNet (Hold) button.  Do not remove this key assignment.

NOTE 6:
You must enable Voice Command in order to use it on the Samsung Epix.  To do this, from the Start menu, select Programs.  Then, select Voice Command.  Finally, select Enable.

3.
From the Start menu, select Mobile Speak.  The Mobile Speak Control Panel will appear.

4.
Select Voices.

5.
Choose the TTS voice you wish to use and tap the MSP Tab key (R1) to move to the next control.  Tap the MSP Tab key again to land on the Edit Settings button and press the phone’s Enter key.

6.
Select the TTS volume, speech rate, and pitch in this Dialog box.  You may use the MSP Tab key to move to the various controls.  Use the 4-way navigation key to adjust each control setting.  Tab to the OK button and press the Enter key.  Press the Enter key a second time to return to the main MSP Control Panel.

7.
From within the main MSP Control Panel, select Function Keys.  The Function Keys Dialog Box will appear.

8.
Select the keyboard layout you wish to modify and Tab to the Edit Button, then, press the Enter key.  This will open a second Dialog Box.

Use the navigation key, the MSP Tab key, and the Enter key to make the following key assignments:

Read Status Command:
Modifier:  Control.
Function:  Camera Hold.

Speak Louder Command:
Modifier:  ALT+Control.
Function:  Message.

Speak Softer Command:
Modifier:  ALT+Control.
Function:  Camera.

Read Whole Screen Command:
Modifier:  ALT.
Function:  Camera Hold.

Stop Speech Command:
Modifier:  Control.
Function:  Camera.

Read Soft Key Command:
Modifier:  Shift..
Function:  Calendar.

Switch To Application Command:
Modifier:  Shift.
Function:  Camera.

9.
Save your settings.

Good Luck and Enjoy,

Mark
