Question:
For some reason, I cannot turn off the Insert key when I am using Microsoft Word. I know the key works because when I use Microsoft Works, it functions correctly. Please help. —D. Conley

Answer:
If you hit the Insert key by accident, you can wind up overwriting text without even realizing it. Maybe that’s why Microsoft disabled overtype mode by default in Word 2007. But don’t worry; the feature is still available.

1.
Click the round Office button at top left.

2.
Click the Word Options button.

3.
Click the Advanced link. Not far from the top, find an item titled Use the Insert key to control overtype mode, and check the box. If you want Word to start off in Overtype mode, then check the box on the next line, too. To see the Overtype/Insert indicator on the status bar, right-click on the bar and click on the Insert option.
