Hello My Fellow Low Vision Limbertwigs,

The following instructions are for those visually impaired Apple iPhone 3GS shutterbugs who wish to take pictures using the VoiceOver screen reader:

To take pictures using the iPhone 3GS camera application via VoiceOver, do the following:

NOTE 1:
This document presumes that you are familiar with basic Apple iPhone 3GS VoiceOver gesture commands.

NOTE 2:
While the following instructions are written for two hands, the same steps can be performed with only one hand.

NOTE 3:
In the following instructions, the Left Hand equals H1 and the Right Hand equals H2.  (In case you can’t tell, I’m left-handed)  (Smile)

1.
From the Home/Springboard Screen of the iPhone 3GS, Double-Tap the Camera Icon.  The Camera application will launch and VoiceOver will say, “View Finder, Image.”  This means that the Camera is live and you can now take a photo.

2.
In the Portrait position, hold the iPhone in H1 so that it rests on three fingers of the hand leaving the thumb free to float over the Display screen.

3.
Point the View Finder at the object of which you wish to take a photo.

NOTE 4:
The Camera lens is located near the upper right corner of the back of the iPhone 3GS.

NOTE 5:
At the bottom of the iPhone 3GS Display Screen (currently serving as the View finder), there are three virtual buttons from left to right in the following order:  [Show Last Image], [Take Picture], and [Mode Photo/Video].

4.
Slide H1 thumb over and onto the [Take Picture] Button and press down.  Do not release this button.  Please note that this is not a VoiceOver Double-Tap gesture.  If done correctly, you will hear only one short Click (not the sound of a shutter) followed by VoiceOver saying, “Take Picture, Button.”

NOTE 6:
At this point, you may continue to press down on this button as long as you wish.

5.
While keeping the View Finder pointed at the object of which you wish to take a photo, while at the same time pressing the [Take Picture] Button with the H1 thumb, with any finger of H2, gently touch anywhere on the View finder and the picture will be taken.

6.
You may now remove all fingers, thumbs, and toes from the View Finder.

Congratulations, you are now an official Apple-Bobbing Shutterbug.

Mark
