Hello Mark

I am interested in knowing about some of the non-traditional features of Mobile Geo and you are the first person I thought of asking.

I’m an outdoor enthusiast, hiking, running, biking, mountaineering… I am wondering what capabilities Mobile Geo would have for those kind of activities.  Is Mobile Geo capable of creating tracks and allowing me to retrace my steps?  For example, if my wife and I go on a 40 mile bike ride, can Mobile Geo help us retrace our steps to get home?  Also, does Mobile Geo do altitudes, and how accurate is it?  Can MG give your speed and mileage, such as for long runs or bike rides?  Finally, is it possible to load tracks created by other GPS users and have Mobile Geo follow them (such as a bike ride or hike that someone else has done)?

Thanks for any help, and keep up all of the great work with your podcasts and blogs.

Hello,

Wow!  Your life sounds exciting.

The following answers are mine and mine alone and in no way represent Code Factory, its employees, or any of its affiliates.

Question:
Is Mobile Geo capable of creating tracks and allowing me to retrace my steps?

Answer:
I am assuming that you mean retracing tracks in the sense of off-road navigation.  The short answer is, “No.”  While Mobile Geo does have a “Getting Warmer” feature, this feature does not act like a trail of breadcrumbs allowing one to retrace an exact path.  With the Getting Warmer feature, in effect, Geo points to a location and says proverbially, “There it is.”  How one chooses to reach that location, again off-road, is entirely left to the user to decide.

Question:
Also, does Mobile Geo do altitudes?

Answer:
Yes.

Question:
How accurate is it?

Answer:
I am not an expert on GPS navigation accuracy; however, I can tell you that Geo is as accurate as any generally available commercial off-the-shelf GPS navigation solution.

Question:
Can MG give your speed and mileage, such as for long runs or bike rides?

Answer:
Yes.

Question:
Is it possible to load tracks created by other GPS users and have Mobile Geo follow them (such as a bike ride or hike that someone else has done)?

Answer:
Since Geo does not create off-road tracks, the answer is, “No.”

Remember, the primary goal of Geo is to provide GPS navigation using street level maps.  While I am sure that Geo could be extended to better benefit off-road navigation, currently, this is outside the scope of the application.

Thank you for your kind words regarding the BLOG and the podcasts.

Take care and please let me know if you have any further questions, OK?

Mark
