Hello,

For some reason, Microsoft decided that Windows Mobile Standard Edition users (previously known as Smart phone users) do not need to create new documents on their mobile devices using the Office Mobile suite.  Just so you know, Pocket PC users (now called Professional users) have had this functionality since day 1.

One rather simple solution that will take up less than 42kb of storage space on your device, is to create a blank MS Word and/or Excel document on your PC, mark it as Read Only, and then copy the file to your Smart Phone.  Doing this will allow you to simply select the “New Word Document” template when you are ready to create, rather than merely edit a piece of work.

These steps are done with Office 2003 because Office Mobile for Windows Mobile Standard Edition devices do not support Office 2007 at the time of this writing.

The following steps assume that you wish to create a new MS Word document:

1.
On your PC, open Microsoft Word.

2.
From the File menu, select “Save As”.

3.
In the File Name edit field, type in “New Word Doc.dot” (without the quote marks.)

4.
Click the [Save] button.

5.
Close MS Word.

6.
Launch Windows Explorer on your PC and locate the name of the file you just saved.  Make sure it is highlighted/selected but do not open it.

7.
Right mouse click on the filename and select Properties.

8.
In the File Properties Dialog Box, Left mouse click on the Read-Only checkbox located near the bottom of the window.

9.
Click the [OK] button.

10.
With the filename still selected in Windows Explorer, on your PC, copy the file to the Clipboard.

11.
If you have not already done so, connect your Windows Mobile device to your computer

12.
Via MS ActiveSync or MS Mobile Center, (I have only used ActiveSync) browse to the My Documents Folder generally located in the My Windows Based Device Folder on your Smart Phone.

13.
Paste the file you just copied to the Clipboard into this folder.

14.
You may now disconnect your Smart Phone from your PC.

15.
On your Smart Phone, launch Mobile Word.

16.
From within Mobile Word, open the Shortcut menu by pressing the Right Soft Key on your Smart Phone.

17.
Choose Open.

18.
Select “New Word Doc”.

Voila!  You have a new blank word document ready to go.
