Hello Fellow Windows Mobile Wanderers,

In this post, I will show you how to adjust the speech rate of Microsoft Voice Command.

That’s right.  You can either decrease or increase the speech rate at which Voice Command replies, questions, and comments to reflect your personal preferences.

Oh!  Let’s do some housekeeping first, OK?

As described by Microsoft, Voice Command transforms your device into your own virtual personal assistant, letting you use your voice to look up contacts, make phone calls, get calendar information, play and control your music, as well as start programs.

As a general rule, Voice Command is already installed on most Windows Mobile 6.0 Professional devices and all Windows Mobile 6.1 devices.

NOTE 1:
On many Windows Mobile devices that have Voice Command installed as a free accessory, it may be necessary to enable the application before attempting to use it for the first time.

NOTE 2:
Those using Windows Mobile 5.0 or Windows Mobile 6.0 Standard Edition devices much purchase Voice Command as a separate application.   To learn how to purchase Microsoft Voice Command for Windows Mobile,

NOTE 3:
Even though the following instructions are based on the Samsung SGH-i907 Smartphone, similar steps may be taken to access the same feature-set on other Windows Mobile devices.

NOTE 4:
This document presumes that you know how to use a computer to gain access to your Windows Mobile device.

NOTE 5:
A Windows Mobile Registry Editor is required in order to adjust the speech rate of Microsoft Voice Command.

NOTE 6:
Some Windows Mobile devices, such as the Samsung Epix SGH-i907 Smartphone Pocket PC, may require that an application unlocker first be installed, on the device, before the Registry may be modified.

To adjust the Microsoft Voice Command speech rate setting, do the following:

NOTE 7:
Make sure you have established a Standard Partnership between your wireless device and your computer.

1.
From within your Windows Mobile Registry editor, browse to:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Speech\Voices

2.
Locate the Key labeled DefaultTTSRate and note that its value is set to 4.

3.
Change this Key’s value to either decrease or increase the Voice Command speech rate.

NOTE 8:
Lower values decrease the rate of speech while higher values increase the rate of speech.

NOTE 9:
I recommend setting the voice rate value to 8.

4.
Close the Registry editor.

5.
Detach the device from the computer.

6.
Reboot the wireless device.

7.
After the device has successfully powered on, command it to your heart’s content.  (Smile)

Enjoy,

Mark
